Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology by Coursework and Research (66%)

The MA in sociology may also be completed by coursework and research. Students enrolled in this program must take two coursework subjects and complete a research thesis of 25,000-35,000 words in length. This course provides students who already have an honours degree in anthropology, sociology or other cognate disciplines with the opportunity to expand, update and deepen their knowledge and understanding. Other students may gain entry to this masters course by first completing an Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Research). Students may choose such a program for various reasons, including the desire to pursue their own intellectual interests, to gain more specialised knowledge and detailed understanding of a particular area, to acquire technical and applied skills and knowledge, or to prepare themselves for a PhD and a career in research and teaching. The course may be taken over one and a half years full-time or three years part-time.

Entry Requirements and Length of Candidature

Applicants should have an Honours degree with a grade of H1 or H2A in a relevant discipline (or equivalent qualification) or and Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Research) with a research component in sociology or anthropology with an overall grade of H2A or above as well as a distinction or above in the research component.
