Biography
Brigid Maher completed her PhD at Monash University in 2008. She has taught at Monash University, the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University. She is a member of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS) and was Co-Chair of the 2009 IATIS Conference hosted by the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics at Monash University. Brigid spent part of her childhood in Italy and speaks fluent Italian, as well as some Spanish and German.

Research interests
Brigid’s research interests include literary translation, contemporary Italian literature and society, the translation of Australian literature and Australianness, the translation of humour and taboo, and audiovisual and multimodal translation. Her doctoral thesis, Jest and Recreation: The Translation of Humour, explored the translation of humour in Italian and English literature. The first of these translations, The House in via Manno [original title: Mal di pietre] appeared in August 2009. The second, While the Shark Sleeps [Mentre dorme il pescecane], will appear in mid 2010.
