Gender Studies

Major

Students completing a major must complete:
  • the first year sequence (12 points)
  • a core unit (6 points)
  • plus five elective units (30 points)
At least 18 points must be taken at third year level.

First-year sequence:

Students studying a sequence in Gender studies complete 12 points:

ATS1311 and one other first year Arts unit

Second and third year:

Students studying a minor in gender studies must complete 24 points by choosing one of the following combinations:

  • the first year sequence and two units at second year level, including the compulsory unit, from the units listed below
  • two units at second year level and two units at third year level, including the compulsory unit, from the units listed below.

Students studying a major in gender studies must have completed the first-year sequence. In addition:

  • a major requires completion of a further six units (36 points), including the compulsory unit, from the units listed below. A minimum of three units must be taken at third year level. For students wishing to undertake Honours in Gender Studies, ATS3852 Contemporary Issues in Sociological Research is highly recommended.

Minor

Students studying a minor in Gender studies must complete 24 points by choosing one of the following two minor combinations:

Minor one (12 points at first year, plus 12 points at second year)

ATS1311 and one other first year Arts unit

ATS2560 Theorising Sexed Bodies: Contemporary Feminist Theory

and one additional unit from the following list:

ATS2561 Sex and the Media
ATS2563 Global Consumption, Sex and Race
ATS2466 Sex and crime

ATS2715 Sexuality and society
ATS2718 Families, relationships and intimate life
ATS2727 Men, masculinity and society

First-year level

Students studying a sequence in gender studies must complete two units (12 points) from the following:

ATS1311 and one other first year Arts unit

Second/Third-year level

Students studying a minor or major in gender studies must have completed the first-year sequence. In addition, a minor requires completion of a further two units (12 points) from the units listed below, excluding any unit studied as part of the first-year sequence.
